Memorial plaque to Ivan Ogienko

Ivan Ohienko (1882-1972) - linguist, historian, ethnographer, writer, translator, church and public figure. In 1886-1900 he studied at the military paramedic school in Pechersk. After graduation, he underwent a three-year practice and entered the Kyiv University, where he studied and taught in 1903-1918. One of the founders of the Ukrainian People's University in Kyiv. The first rector of the Kamyanets-Podilskyi State Ukrainian University (1918), Minister of Education and Arts, Minister of Confessions of the Government of the UNR (1919-20).

Ivan Ohiyenko is known for translating Holy Scripture into Ukrainian, on which he worked for almost 20 years, which became his life's work. A completely fundamental translation of the Bible on 1529 pages was published in London in 1962, and today it is an unsurpassed property of the Ukrainian people.

After the death of his wife, Ivan Ogienko became a monk with the name Hilarion, was ordained a priest and bishop. From 1951 until his death in 1972, in the rank of Metropolitan of Winnipeg, he headed the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada.

A memorial plaque to Ivan Ohienko was installed in 1998 on the facade of the building of the Institute of Philology of the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.
