Memorial plaque to Pavlo Chubinsky

Pavel Chubinsky (1839-84) - ethnographer, writer, public figure, member of the Kyiv Old Community. Born in the Kyiv region. For "Ukrainian activities" in 1862 he was exiled to Arkhangelsk, in the north of Russia, where he remained until 1869. In 1869-70 he led ethnographic and statistical expeditions to study Ukraine, Belarus and Moldova; the materials of these studies were published in 7 volumes. In 1873-76 he was the secretary and deputy of the Southwestern department of the Russian Geographical Society in Kyiv. After the Ems decree aimed at ousting the Ukrainian language from the cultural sphere, Chubinsky was expelled from Ukraine. In 1876-79 he worked in St. Petersburg. Author of the poem "Shche ne vmerla Ukrayina" (lit. 'Ukraine has not yet perished') (1862), which became the national anthem of Ukraine. He died after a serious illness in Boryspil (the grave was not preserved).

A bronze memorial plaque to Pavlo Chubinsky is installed on the facade of the building of the former Second Men's Gymnasium, where the writer studied in 1852-1858. It unveiled in 1993.
