The refectory with the saints Anthony and Theodosius Church is the most important component of the historical and architectural ensemble of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra. The building was constructed in 1893-1895 at a time when more than a thousand monks were living within the monastery. Its murals and interior decor belong to the best examples of Ukrainian monumental art of the late 19th - early 20th centuries.
The refectory church in the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra is designed in the Russian-Byzantine style. The interior layout of the hall type - the octagonal room of the church through a wide arch is connected to the first floor of the refectory hall. The main volume of the church is completed by a large hemispherical bath, about 20 m in diameter, cut through at the base by 32 arched windows. The model for her was the top of the Hagia Sophia in Constantinople-Istanbul.
The painting of the interiors in the technique of painting was carried out by famous artists. The general solution for the system of murals belongs to the architect Alexei Shchusev, the detailed development and implementation by the artists Ivan Izhakevich, Andriy Lakov, Grigory Popov. In 1903, the monumental painting was completed in the refectory hall, in 1910 - in the church.
