House № 2/1 at the corner of Olhynska Street, Architektora Horodetskoho Street and Ivana Franka Square is one of the successful examples of the use of Moorish motifs in architecture. Since January 27, 1970 - an architectural monument of local importance.
History
As of 1898, the owner of the site was the merchant Leon Goldstein. The house, which was used as a profitable building, was built at the end of the 19th century, presumably, according to the project of the architect Nikolai Yaskevich.
Architecture
The house at 2/1 Olhynska Street is a four-storey, brick, L-shaped building with built-in retail and service premises. It consists of two different-sized rectangular sections, each of which is designed for six large apartments, which are later re-planned. The cut corner of the house is decorated with a rectangular bay window with a balcony at the level of the fourth floor. It ended with a turret that has not survived to this day, which was dismantled during the completion of the floor.
The facades are made in an eclectic style with neo-Moorish elements. Interwindow blades are decorated at the level of the second and third floors with elongated semi-columns, and on the upper tier - with pilasters. The exotic character of the exterior is given by windows with horseshoe and diamond-shaped lintels borrowed from Oriental art, sculptural herms in the form of winged houris under twin half-columns, and carpet stucco ornamentation of inserts. Relief Moorish ornaments adorn the windows with a semicircular arch.
Figured brickwork imitating rustication on the ground floor and in the inter-window blades, as well as artistic metal of balcony and stair railings, are widely used in the decor. The original wooden frames have been preserved in the showcase windows on the side of Architektora Horodetskoho Street.
Famous residents
At one time, famous actors lived in the house on 2/1 Olhynska Street, who worked in the nearby theater named after Ivan Franko. In 1923-1927 and since 1936 - Dmнtro Mylyutenko (1899-1966) - actor, People's Artist of the USSR, in 1944-1966 - Hnat Yura (1888-1966) - actor and director, People's Artist of the USSR, in the 1930s years - Mykola Yakovchenko (1900-1974) - actor, People's Artist of the Ukrainian SSR.
Commemorative plaques
In 1969, a bronze memorial plaque to Hnat Yura was installed on the facade of the house, and in 1985, a granite memorial plaque to Dmytro Mylyutenko was installed.
